Joan Sumey

Joan Sumey of Pilesgrove, NJ passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2024. Joan was born in Auburn, NY to Roy and Mary Richards and was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School. She moved to New Jersey in 1976 where she became active in the PG-CP school district as an active room mother and fundraiser chairperson for 8 years. She was primarily a stay at home “Mom” raising her family. When her children ‘left the nest’ she continued to surround herself with children, taking great joy in providing day care for her grandchildren and friends of the family’s children for years until it was time to move on to the next chapter of her life. She and her husband William Sumey relocated to rural Pennsylvania where Bill had been born so that they could be closer to Bill’s family and experience the close knit country life at the beginning of their ‘retirement’. In addition to organizing many yearly family get togethers, she still found time to work at the Frank Lloyd designed house “Falling Water” Eventually the couple returned to New Jersey in 2000 and she worked in the Pennsville school district for 10 years before finally deciding to officially retire in 2010. She was an active member of the Salem Memorial Hospital Senior Circle, the Elmer Grange and the Alloway’s Seniors Club where she loved the weekly luncheons and get togethers with the other ladies of the circles. She is survived by her children and step children: Janet Nixon (Doug) of Virginia Jeffrey Koskey (Angie) of Pennsville Jon Koskey (Danielle) of Woodstown Joseph Koskey of Pennsville Jarrod Koskey of Pilesgrove Lori Mason (Jay) of Carneys Point John Sumey of Pennsville William Sumey Jr. of Pennsville Joan is also survived by her sister Carol Connery (Joseph) of Syracuse, NY as well as her niece and 2 nephews. She is also survived by multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren in addition to her “adopted” daughter Tammy Whitesell She was pre-deceased by her husband William O Sumey and 3 grandchildren, James Koskey (1991), Caitlyn Koskey (1994) and Kyle Koskey (2004) A viewing will be held on Friday August 2 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Ashcraft Funeral Home in Pennsville. Internment will be scheduled at a later date and will be private.
