Claire J. Bennett

Claire J. Bennett, age 97, resident of Merion Gardens Assisted Living and formerly of Pennsville and Carneys Point, NJ, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at Merion Gardens. Claire was born in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to NJ at a young age. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Schneider, Louise Menzel Schneider Cowan and stepfather, Thomas Cowan. She was the wife of the late Melvin H. Bennett for 66 years. She was predeceased, also, by her three brothers, Bernard(Ann), William(late Marian), and Harry(late Frances) Schneider. Claire will be deeply missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Robert Lythgoe, her grandchildren, Rob(Mary Beth), Kellie(Doug) and her six great-grandchildren, Bobby, Maddie, Caroline, Lindsay, Lucas and Ashley. She is, also, survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and amazing caregivers from Merion Gardens. Claire was a graduate from Penns Grove High School and from Madison De Paris Beauty College. She was owner, with her husband, of Cowan’s Appliance Store and laundromats, for over 40 years, along with being a hair stylist and a devoted housewife. Claire was a dedicated member of the Soroptimist Club in NJ. She loved playing pinochle with her friends, cooking, baking, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and traveling to Florida during the winter months. Everyone enjoyed her delicious meals and desserts. She was a very kind, generous and stylish woman who loved helping others. Family and friends are invited to her viewing on Monday, May 6th, 2024 from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm and Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 from 9:30 am-11:00 am at Ashcraft Funeral Home at 740 S. Broadway Pennsville, NJ 08070 A service will follow at the funeral home at 11:00 am. Burial will be at Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Claire J. Bennett to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Checks should be made out to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation.
