William Roger Matthews, Sr., age 87 of Pedricktown died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County. He was born March 11, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the son of the late Elizabeth (Moore) and Louis Matthews. He came to Carneys Point as an infant and was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Angeline (Maude) and Arthur Hocknell, after his mother’s death. Matty as he was known attended Penns Grove High School and left in his junior year to join the Civilian Conservation Corp. located in Woodbine, NJ. In 1939 he began his employment with DuPont Chambers Works. He married his wife, Pearl V., in 1940, joined the US Navy in 1942 and served in Okinawa aboard the USS Sarpedon during WWII. In 1945, he returned to Penns Grove and to his job at DuPont – Chambers Works. He was a general foreman in the welding dept. and retired after 38 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, spending the summers at their trailer in Cape May, carving wood, doing carpentry work and home improvements and his favorite past time was telling jokes. There wasn’t a subject you could think of that he couldn’t tell you a joke. He was a member of the DuPont Vets, the Deepwater Boys, and was a past member of the Servicemen’s Home and the VFW in Pennsville. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William, Jr. and his wife Judy of Pennsville, his daughter, Pamela Gambino and her husband Vincent of Pedricktown, grandchildren, Terri Lynn Cox and her husband Scott, Stefanie Holmes and her husband, Delbert, Jason Matthews, Vincent Gambino, III and his wife Melissa, Nikki Graham and her husband, Joe, four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He is also survived by a cousin, Charles Hocknell and his wife Angie, who he grew up with as a brother. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Patricia Ann, a step brother, Louis, a stepsister, Dorothy Amadeo, his cousins, Arthur and Henry Hocknell and their sister, Doris Denny. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday in the Ashcraft Funeral Home, 47 State St., Penns Grove where a viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 AM. Interment will be in Pedricktown Baptist Cemetery.
