Verna M. Buckner

Verna M. Buckner, 84 of Daretown passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Wednesday July 22, 2015. She was born on April 20, 1931 to the late Nora Manila (Messer) Hannah and Jessie James Hannah on Cove Creek in Waynesville, NC. Verna married her childhood sweetheart, Clyde J. Buckner on February 28, 1948. They moved from North Carolina to Salem, NJ in 1954 with their two young sons, Bennie and Terry. They welcomed their third child, daughter Connie a few years later. Verna worked at Gaynor Glass and Anchor Hocking for many years. In the late 80’s she became a member of the bluegrass gospel band “The Strings of Gospel” traveling to neighboring states sharing God’s word through song. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was also known as “Mom” to many of her children’s friends. She was known for her southern style of cooking by all who knew her and had the privilege to “pull up to her table.” Verna was predeceased by her beloved husband of almost 61 years Clyde in 2008, son Bennie in 2011, four brothers, Ralph, Zeb, Winifred and Fred Hannah, and three sisters, Velma Shelton, Desi Parks and Orean Caldwell. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son Terry and Lori (Adams) of Carneys Point and her daughter Connie Legg and husband Kelly of Daretown, Daughter-in-law Judy Buckner (Sutton) of Pennsville, and two very special “daughters” Veronica Hoyle of Daretown and Cheryl Atwell of Pennsville. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren, sisters, Christine Childers of Whittier, NC and Myrtle Hannah of Elsinboro. A loving music filled celebration of Verna’s life will be held 11:00 AM on Monday July 27, 2015 at Sharptown United Methodist Church under the loving officiating of Pastor Doug Smith. Family and friends may call at the church from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Lawnside Cemetery in Woodstown followed by a luncheon back at Sharptown Church.
